Here you will find images of Marjorie and me from our 2006 trip to the Pacific Northwest. The narrative accompanying the photographs here are meant to remind us of the places we visited...perhaps someday to retrace our steps.

aaronphotoarchive > After a couple of days in Seattle, we made our way northwards, directly to the Mt. Baker National Forest. We stayed at the Inn at Mount Baker (http://www.theinnatmtbaker.com/), which was absolutely excellent, providing a spectacular view of Mt. Baker itself, some 15 miles away. On the first afternoon we drove up to Artist Point, which had only been open about a week due to the remnants of the heavy snow coverage that had left the road impassable well into July! Artist point involves a large parking lot at the end of the road from which many hikes can be commenced. We arrived late in the afternoon, at the beginning of sunset. We remained until darkness...we and a handful of other photographers, taking in the stunning sunset over the North Cascades (you can see images of that sunset at http://www.dhaimages.com).

aaronphotoarchive > Our first long hike took us up to Ridgeline Ridge. The dirt road to the trailhead was about eleven miles long, with hairpin turns, deep ruts, and very steep sections. What a blast! It took almost an hour to get there due to the slow speeds. The ascension takes you through glorious old growth forest of hemlock and cedar.

aaronphotoarchive > You arrive at the top to a spectacular view over the North Cascades...or, what is supposed to be a spectacular view. Here you see that once we got there, clouds descended making it feel as if you were walking through rain. We hiked to the peak that you can see in the background, but by that time, you could not see your hand in front of your face. We sat down, ate a snack, and headed back down. After 30 minutes, we were below the cloud cover. At least you can see here that the name, Ridgeline, is quite appropriate. You quite literally walk on the ridge atop the world. We'll just have to return on a clear day.

aaronphotoarchive > This was on the trail of Neahkahnie Ridge, which is just south of Canon Beach, Oregon. A beautiful forest, surprisingly rich in old growth, given its proximity to the ocean and vulnerability to storms. It was very windy (hence the blurred foliage). This is a highly recommended short hike...a couple of hours up and back.
