Eugene (b. 18 June 1890, Antwerp, Belgium) and Hugo, like their father, Simon, were Chazanim (Cantors). Date of photo uncertain. From 1915-1916 he served a synagogue in Bremgarten, near Zurich; subsequently, he worked in St. Gallen, where he served the new Orthodox Congregation Adass Jisraoel until 1919. Then he served in Liestal, near Basel until 1921. He married Alice Bloch (from Hegenheim (Haut-Rhin), France) on 17 Dec 1918. From 1921-1923, Eugene worked for the Jewish community of Rexingen (Wuerttemberg), where his son, Arthur was born (15 Aug 1922). From 1923 until 1929, he served a Jewish community in Luxembourg. Finally, in 1929 (26 May) he assumed his position in Sarreguemines, France, where he remained until being taken by the Nazis to Auschwitz (see following photos). The Yad Vashem database lists only two "Eugene Adlers," one as born in Antwerpen in 1888 and one as residing in Sarreguemines, France, in 1938. I am assuming this is the same person, but that the birthdate is wrong. The birthdate of 1890 was established by Dr. Fetthauer. Some day, I shall endeavor to retrieve the birth certificate in Antwerp. [ArcAdler 008]
