Berlin Holocaust Memorial
I have mixed feelings about this installation. It is physically and aesthetically very impressive, but there is not a single word providing a narrative, and it now sits alongside a strip of tourist focused souvenir shops that blare music. There is no sense of "sanctity," nor would an unknowing tourists even understand what this is unless they enter specifically from the one place that the site is identified (it is possible to enter from any side). Most disturbing is that teenagers are running around and playing tag, or smoking deep among the blocks. These elements diminish the sense of holiness that there should be at this site. It just doesn't succeed as a memorial. And yet it could. If it were situated differently, if there were a strong guiding narrative, it could...but it doesn't.
