Schloss Wartburg, oldest section finished in 1067, served as Thuringian leaders' fortress until 1211, after which they built other castles. St. Elizabeth lived here from 2011 to 1228. Luther was hidden here by Frederick the Wise to avoid the excommunication of the Diet of Worms, and translated the New Testament from Greek into German, May 1521 to March 1522.
