Arrival, Snowmass 2011
We arrived in Snowmass on July 1, 2011. Many photos have captions explaining what they are showing. You must click on the image thumbnail in order for the larger image to appear with the caption at the right. Or even better: click on the word "SLIDESHOW" at the top right corner of the screen, and you will see larger sizes of the images in sequence.

This was taken as we ascended toward Buckskin Pass, which is at 12,462 feet--the connecting point between Maroon Bells Wilderness and Snowmass Wilderness. We are well above Crater Lake here, with a view of Pyramid Peak, 14,018 feet. We hiked for another 45 minutes up this route, at which point the clouds started coming in. Thunderstorms were predicted, and we were nearing the treeline--one does not want to be above tree-line in a thunderstorm; we turned around and headed back. Later we learned that the snow pack is still so high at Buckskin Pass that we wouldn't have been able to climb much beyond where we were anyway.
